M-DCPS HOSTS BOND PROJECT KICK-OFF EVENT AT FREDERICK DOUGLASS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

MIAMI - Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho, School Board member Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall, District 2, and community leaders gathered at Frederick Douglass Elementary School today for a kick-off event for bond projects resulting from the overwhelming voter approval of the $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond. The bond will be used to modernize and construct school buildings throughout the district, expand student capacity, enhance facility safety, and provide technology upgrades at all schools. The Frederick Douglass Elementary School project valued at $8 million includes the demolition and replacement of the existing buildings constructed in 1953 and 1958 with a brand new elementary school for approximately 300 students. The new campus will debut primary and intermediate classrooms, a music/art suite, media center, kitchen/serving area, dining/multi-purpose room, playfield, hard courts and a new playground.

The Board commissioned Zyscovich Architects as the architect of record for the project. The firm has committed to a MBE/SBE participation goal of 32 percent; two of its sub-consultants are women-owned firms and two others are Hispanic-owned firms. Design has started and construction is scheduled to commence September of 2015 with completion anticipated by December 2016.
