TEACHERS UNION RATIFIES AGREEMENT

United Teachers of Dade (UTD) members have ratified a salary and benefits agreement that covers more than 21,000 Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) teachers and 4,600 support and clerical personnel.

“Nearly 80 percent of union members voted in favor of higher salaries and enhanced health care benefits,” said Miami-Dade Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. “This is a decisive show of support by the workers who most directly influence the education and success of our children.”

The agreement represents a total compensation increase of 4.3 percent, inclusive of a two percent prorated salary increase, a one percent prorated one-time stipend and a 1.3 percent healthcare cost containment.

A $14 million health benefit increase, assumed by the School Board during an era of dramatic escalation of health care costs, reduces the potential burden to School Board employees by as much as 1.3 percent.

Instructional support personnel (paraprofessionals, security monitors, and UTD office personnel) will also receive a two percent salary increase plus a one-time supplement of one percent.

The total cost of this salary and benefits proposal for both teachers and educational support personnel is $40.9 million.

The District and the union also came to an agreement regarding time and adjustments to the schedules of nursing mothers to allow them to provide for their children.

This tentative agreement will be presented to the School Board of Miami-Dade County for approval.
