SCHOOL DISTRICT REACHES TENTATIVE AGREEMENTS WITH TWO MORE LABOR ORGANIZATIONS

MIAMI-Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) reached tentative agreements with two more labor organizations this week--the Dade County School Administrators Association (DCSAA) and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).

Earlier this week, United Teachers of Dade members ratified a tentative agreement with the District, and the Miami-Dade County School Board voted in favor of the agreement at its Nov. 19th meeting. Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho reported to the School Board that contracts were also in place for the district’s Managerial Exempt and Confidential Exempt personnel, and that the majority of district employees including principals, assistant principals, teachers, paraprofessionals, clerical staff, security monitors and non-school site staff were under contract for salary and health benefits.

DCSAA
Highlights of the tentative agreement with DCSAA regarding salary increases and health benefits include:

  • A salary enhancement of two percent;
  • A health benefit increase, assumed by the School Board during an era of dramatic escalation of health care costs, reduces the potential burden to School Board employees by as much as four percent.  Additional benefit enhancements have also been agreed to with a value of $1.3 million.

The tentative agreement must be ratified by the association’s membership and must be approved by the School Board.  Ratification is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 25.

AFSCME
Highlights of the tentative agreement with AFSCME include:

  • A salary enhancement of two percent;
  • A health benefit increase, assumed by the School Board during an era of dramatic escalation of health care costs, reduces the potential burden to School Board employees by as much as four percent.  Additional benefit enhancements have also been agreed to with a value of $1.3 million.

The tentative agreement must be ratified by the AFSCME membership and must be approved by the School Board.
