HIALEAH HIGH’S THOROUGHBRED MARCHING BAND MAKES HISTORY BY
WINNING 2ND STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Their band uniforms have been around for more years than they’ve been attending school. They practice on their tarnished instruments, sometimes up to five hours after school. But talent and dedication paid off for these Hialeah Senior High School students when they won first place in the 2014 Class 1A Florida Marching Band State Championship last week!

Hialeah High’s Marching Thoroughbreds have also made history by being the only Miami-Dade school to ever win two state championships.

This “T-Bred” band – all 36 of them, including the color guard – is smaller than a typical marching band, but their passion and cohesiveness allowed them to win second place in the semifinals after battling it out against 30 other schools; earning them a one of the five spots at the finals.

Their championship-winning performance is titled, “Call of the Wild,” and consists of five movements:  The Beginning, The Forest, Dance of the Tribal People, Song of Water, and Wrath of the Storm.  A video of the entire performance, held at the Tropicana Dome in Tampa,  can be viewed on YouTube at:

Band Director Omar Perez credits their courage, strength and commitment for their inspiring performance and victory.  In his HHS Thoroughbred Band blog, he tells his students to “always drive yourselves to be better than you were the day before.”
