M-DCPS Food & Nutrition Open House of test kitchen, food truck and new recipes

WHY:

In just three weeks, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) will be welcoming more than 340,000 students back to school. Our Food and Nutrition Department has been working diligently planning healthy, nutritious menus for the school year ahead. The department is offering media a behind-the-scenes look at its Test Kitchen, new food selections including the Lean and Green initiative, and compostable food trays.

Fast Facts:

  • 50 million meals served yearly
  • 90,000 breakfasts and nearly 200,000 lunches served daily
  • 6 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables served yearly
  • $75 million worth of food purchased yearly
  • Seventy-four percent of M-DCPS students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch
  • Foods with trans fats or hydrogenated oils are banned from our menu 

M-DCPS also offers free breakfast to every student, for a healthy start to their academic day. From August 24 through November 2, students who eat breakfast at school every day will be entered in a weekly drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card. Thirty winners will be randomly selected each week.
