M-DCPS FOREIGN-BORN STUDENTS WILL LEARN TO BECOME
INFORMED CITIZENS WITH ‘RALLY TO THE TALLY’ FIELDTRIP

Some 300 foreign-born 9th and 10th-grade students – with less than three academic years in the country – from 13 Miami-Dade County public high schools, will begin a four-day field trip to the state capital on Monday, Jan. 12, 2015.  Along the way, they will stop at University of Central Florida, University of Florida and Florida State University for campus visits and orientation talks.  The students previously visited Florida International University.

The initiative is part of the first-ever “Rally to the Tally for New Floridians,” in collaboration with the Close Up Foundation and funded by Title III, Part A, Enhanced Opportunities for Recently Arrived Immigrant Children and Youth Grant.

Students will learn about state and federal government, tour the Capitol, meet state agency officials and prepare a Youth Legislative Agenda to present their committee proposals at the Capitol to members of the House and Senate on Thursday morning.  Activities will foster confidence for active citizenship, raising awareness of the American cultural values placed on education and community involvement.

Participating students represent countries in the Caribbean; Central, North and South Americas; and Europe. Their high schools include:  Hialeah Gardens, Hialeah-Miami Lakes, Miami Central, Miami Edison, Miami Sunset, Miami Coral Park, Miami Killian, Miami Senior, North Miami Beach, South Dade, South Miami, Felix Varela and Westland Hialeah.

Follow their journey on social media using #rallytothetally.
