M-DCPS HOSTS BOND PROJECT KICK-OFF EVENT AT
SHENANDOAH MIDDLE SCHOOL

Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho, District 6 School Board member Raquel Regalado, and community leaders gathered at Shenandoah Middle School today for a kick-off event for bond projects resulting from the overwhelming voter approval of the $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond. The bond will be used to modernize and construct school buildings throughout the district, expand student capacity, enhance facility safety, and provide technology upgrades at all schools.

Shenandoah Middle School renovations valued at approximately $7.2 million include extensive building repairs such as complete HVAC system replacement, selective re-roofing, window and exterior door replacement, structural repairs, stair, handrail and railing replacement, interior door, hardware and frame replacement as needed, and exterior painting.

Saltz Michelson Architects, Inc. was commissioned as the architect of record for the project and has committed to a SBE/MBE sub-consultant participation goal of 25 percent. Thornton Construction Company, Inc. was commissioned for pre-construction services. The firm, which is M/WBE District-certified, has committed to a SBE/MBE sub-consultant participation goal of 10 percent during pre-construction, and then to a 25 percent participation goal during construction and a 20 percent goal during construction management activities. The design phase is slated to be completed in summer of 2015 with a projected construction award in early 2016 and construction completion in the summer of 2017.
