M-DCPS ADMINISTRATOR HONORED BY MIAMI-DADE PARKS & RECREATION AS AN INFLUENTIAL SOUTH FLORIDA WOMAN

Miami-Dade County Public Schools Associate Superintendent Iraida Mendez-Cartaya was honored last night at the 27th Annual In the Company of Women Awards ceremony, presented by Macy’s and sponsored by Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation Department.

Mendez-Cartaya, who could not attend the event, was in Tallahassee working at the State Legislature for the more than 350,000 children that attend the school system. Mendez-Cartaya oversees intergovernmental relations on the local, state, federal and international levels for the school district, as well as grants acquisition and management. Under her leadership, the dollar value of supplemental funding to the school district has increased substantially to more than $700 million.

“I enjoy working with parents and community leaders, and in general working with other people for the betterment of educational services for our children,” said Mendez-Cartaya, a 25-year Miami-Dade County Public Schools employee. “I enjoy finding ways for us to partner together, ways for us to find solutions and improve the quality of life in Miami-Dade.”

Mendez-Cartaya graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in business administration and taxation. She started a career in education, however, which has allowed her to do what she loves best: taking care of children and making sure the county’s school tax dollars are put to good use.

In the Company of Women was created in 1989 as a way to unite the diverse population of Miami-Dade County by recognizing outstanding women who have impacted our community in a positive way.  Recipients are from many professions including government and politics, law, health, education, the arts, sports, business, journalism and the social sciences.
