M-DCPS CHIEF FACILITIES OFFICER HONORED BY
COUNCIL OF THE GREAT CITY SCHOOLS

Jaime G. Torrens, Chief Facilities Officer for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, has been named the recipient of the 2015 Distinguished Service Award by the Council of the Great City Schools. The award is being presented at the Council’s four-day annual meeting for Chief Operating Officers, Chiefs of Security and Directors of Facilities, Transportation, Procurement and Food Services from 67 of the nation’s largest urban public school systems.

Torrens, a 30-year veteran of the school system, is responsible for facilities planning, construction, maintenance, operations and inspections. He directs a staff of a thousand responsible for all aspects of 3,100 buildings comprising 45 million square feet on more than 400 school campuses and ancillary facilities.

Torrens also is leading the implementation of the District’s $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond program approved by voters in 2012 to renovate, construct and modernize school facilities throughout Miami-Dade County. This five-year program includes instructional technology upgrades at every school to provide equity throughout all campuses.

The Council of the Great City Schools presents the Distinguished Service Award to recognize and honor business officials who exemplify leadership, innovation, commitment and professionalism in ur¬ban education.
