As news media around the nation report that the Third International
Mathematics and Science Study shows U.S. students lag behind those
elsewhere, Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Roger C.
Cuevas announced that the district won a clean sweep of awards for
math and science achievement by a student, teacher and school.
Miami Palmetto Senior High School student Rene H. Shen won the top
Siemens Award for scoring higher on more Advanced Placement (AP)
exams than any other 11th-grade boy in the South. He was one of only
24 students in the nation to receive the honor.
Siemens Foundation Advanced Placement Awards are given to 10th-,
11th- and 12th- graders who score the highest on the greatest number
of AP (college-level) examinations in seven science and math courses.
Winners are identified by the College Board and the Educational
Testing Service, which administer the national exams.
The Siemens Foundation also recognizes teachers for "innovative
teaching of extended high-performance with diverse student groups."
From 22,000 teachers, the foundation chose Humberto A. Garcia, AP
calculus teacher at G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School, as one of
the 20 top AP teachers in the United States.
The foundation chose G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School as one of
four urban schools to receive its annual AP award. The school was
chosen for its large AP enrollment and outstanding student
achievement on examinations.
"We are deeply gratified to receive national recognition for our
successful mathematics and science initiatives," said Superintendent
Cuevas.
