CAMPAIGN

Miami-Dade County Public Schools' JUST READ campaign has won the
Sunshine State School Public Relations Association's (SUNSPRA) top
prize for a public relations program promoting a learning discipline.
SUNSPRA's annual recognition program takes entries from all 67
counties in Florida.
The JUST READ campaign was initiated by Superintendent of Schools
Roger C. Cuevas to create awareness and enthusiasm about the
district's rigorous Comprehensive Reading Plan (CRP). The CRP,
approved by the Board last year to bolster student performance,
mandates reading achievement benchmarks, unifies instruction, and
stresses early intervention reading strategies. Another component of
the plan includes convincing others - educators, students, parents,
and the business community included - that they all have an important
role in the plan's success.
The SUNSPRA award will be presented to school system representatives
at the Florida School Boards Association conference in Tampa on
Friday, Dec. 3, at 8:30 a.m. For more information, contact Carol
Cortes, Deputy Superintendent of Management and Accountability, at
305-995-2940.
