Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) students are participating
in a variety of creative fund-raising activities for the United Way
this year. One of the most innovative approaches was the "Ugly Miss
Coral Gables" contest held by students at Southwest Senior High
School last week. Thirty-one male students competed in the
not-so-beautiful pageant and helped raise more than $4,225.43.
Other innovative fund-raising activities included: Bubble Gum Day at
Virginia A. Boone Highland Oaks Elementary where students contributed
$1 for the privilege of chewing bubble gum all day; a P.E.-a-thon at
Claude Pepper Elementary where students contributed $1 to extend
their recreation periods; lunch with the principal at Winston Park
Elementary where students contributed $5 to dine with the school
leader; and a water balloon toss at Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor
Elementary where students paid to toss water balloons at their
favorite teacher.
Also, the longtime rivalry between Miami Sunset and G. Holmes
Braddock senior highs was used to the United Way's benefit. Students
from both schools sold "spirit links" that were formed into paper
chains and displayed at halftime during the football game between the
two schools. The spirit challenge contributed more than $5,000 to the
campaign.
Other fund raisers are boosting the campaign as well. Jack D. Gordon
Elementary School's candy sale has netted more than $5,392.36 to
date.
The M-DCPS Student United Way Campaign runs through November 2 and
has been the number one student campaign in the nation for the last
21 years.
