MIAMI-DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD ELECTS
PERLA TABARES HANTMAN AS CHAIR,
DR. MICHAEL KROP AS VICE-CHAIR
CONTACT: Dr. Henry C. Fraind
305-995-1206
November 16, 1999
The Miami-Dade County School Board elected Perla Tabares Hantman as
chair and Dr. Michael Krop as its vice-chair for the coming year.
After commending Dr. Solomon C. Stinson for the fine job he has
done in chairing the Board during the past three years, the new
School Board chair noted that school overcrowding, teachers'
salaries, improving test scores, and student safety are some of the
issues that we must tackle during the coming year.
First elected to the Board in November 1996 as its representative for
District 4, Hantman is a former member of the Florida Board of
Regents and of the Florida State Commission on Child Support. From
1961 to 1963 she worked as Assistant Public Information Officer with
the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare in Miami.
Hantman was born in Havana, Cuba, where she taught first grade before
coming to this country. In 1991, she was awarded an honorary
doctorate in humanities from The Gregorian University, Rome.
Dr. Krop, an orthodontist, has served as a School Board member since
1980. He has chaired the Board and has served as its vice chair for
several terms.
The Board will hold a regular meeting at 1 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday,
Nov. 17). The full meeting agenda may be seen in the following
locations: in the lobby of the administration building, in each of
the school system's region offices, and at William H. Turner
Technical Arts Senior High, Miami Coral Park Adult Education Center,
Miami Senior High Adult Education Center, Miami Carol City Adult
Education Center, and South Dade Adult Education Center.
