Carrie Mickey, an assistant superintendent in Miami-Dade's Office of
Applied Technology, Adult, and Career Education, recently was
presented with the Hall of Fame Award from the Florida Administrators
of Adult and Community Education (FAACE).
FAACE's most prestigious honor, the Hall of Fame Award has been
presented to 63 individuals since 1979, and acknowledges long-term,
extraordinary contributions made by an adult or community
educator.
A 30-year veteran of the school system, Mickey began her career as a
staff nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital. In 1969, she joined Booker
T. Washington Junior High where she piloted the first health
occupations program.
Mickey currently is responsible for the education of more than
250,000 adult students enrolled in 27 adult education centers, and
oversees the career education programs for all 350,000 K-12 students.
Under her leadership, the office has successfully spearheaded
School-To-Work, Tech Prep, performance-based education, and welfare
reform initiatives.
