Mario F. Fernandez, a 12th-grader at Hialeah Senior High School, will
sign a five-year football scholarship commitment with Florida
Atlantic University (FAU) at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at the
school, 251 East 47 St., Hialeah.
The 6-foot-4-inch quarterback becomes the first football player
signed by Coach Howard Schnellenberger for FAU's inaugural season
next fall. Fernandez, who has a 3.0 grade point average, passed for
1,000 yards, threw five touchdown passes, rushed for 600 yards, and
scored six rushing touchdowns during the 1999-2000 season. He was a
member of the All-Dade District Team in 1999.
