Nine Miami-Dade public schools will pilot the national observance of
"First Day of School Holiday" on Monday with orientation receptions
for parents.
The schools are Aspira Charter, South; Bziscayne Gardens, Florida
City, Charles Hadley, Kendale Lakes, North Twin Lakes, Oak Grove, and
Pine Lake elementary schools and Miami Central Senior High
School.
Each school has a unique program to usher in the new school year.
Florida City Elementary, for example, is holding a "Back to School
Bash" with its community partners, including Covenant Community
Development, Florida Kid Care, Homestead Hospital FHA, and the Martin
Luther King Clinic. From 8:30 to 10 a.m. North Twin Lakes Elementary
parents will take part in an information fair on topics such as
school uniforms, free and reduced-price lunches, the schedule of PTA
workshops, and testing.
Initiated in 1997 in Bennington, Vermont, the First Day of School
Holiday is a community-wide celebration that calls for employers to
allow working parents time off to participate.
According to Parent Participation Coordinator Anne Thompson, its goal
is to make parents feel welcome and comfortable at their child's
school. "It capitalizes on parents' interests and concerns to make
them active partners with the school," she said.
