ADA MERRITT SCHOOL TO REOPEN AS DISTRICT'S FIRST COMMUTER
SCHOOL
March 5, 2003
Ada Merritt School, located at 660 S.W. 3rd Street near
downtown Miami, is set to reopen this fall, continuing in
its tradition of excellence, with unique academic programs
and convenience features especially designed for the
working, commuting parent.
As the school district's first "commuter school," so-called
because parents who work nearby can conveniently drive their
children to and from school, Ada Merritt is open to Pre-K -
grade 3 students from Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe
counties. Children can be dropped off as early as 6:30 a.m.
and picked up as late as 7 p.m., as the school offers
extended before- and after-school care programs.
Housed in a beautifully reconstructed historic building
inspired by the school's original 1923 design, Ada Merritt
is awaiting authorization from the International
Baccalaureate Organization to offer its Primary Years
Programme. This is the world's most rigorous elementary
school curriculum and is offered in only a handful of
schools in the U.S. and Europe. A challenging dual language
education also is provided. While mastering English,
students will acquire Portuguese or Spanish as a second
language.
Applications for fall admission are due May 2, 2003. For an
application, call 305-642-7555 or visit adamerritt.dadeschools.net/.
Ada Merritt School is designed to meet the demand for higher
academic standards and to ease demands on the working
parent. It is the first school on the Miami-Dade School
Board's newly approved school-choice menu that will greatly
expand parents' freedom to select programs and schools over
the next five years.
For more information, contact the school's principal, Cory
Gonzalez-Yglesias, at 305-642-7555.
