SUPERINTENDENT STIERHEIM TO SIGN AGREEMENT WITH ARMY OFFICIALS

May 21, 2003

Superintendent Merrett R. Stierheim will sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Gen. James T. Hill of the U.S. Southern Command, at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 22 in Room 916 of the School Board Administration Building, 1450 N.E. Second Ave.

"The MOA will be significant in helping ease the transitions faced by students who are the children of military personnel assigned to our area," said Superintendent Stierheim.

Military-connected students are often faced with numerous moves during their formative years. These transitions may have deep impact, especially when they occur during a student's high school career. The Army's Secondary Education Transition Study revealed that the average military-connected student moves more than two times during their high school years. The agreement will assist in the development of systems that facilitate students' entry into and release from Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

The MOA will help ease records requirements for students entering and leaving Miami-Dade public schools. Military-connected students will not face retroactive academic requirements and will have assistance with placement in charter schools and magnet programs. Additionally, orientation services will be available to help students adjust. College admissions services will also be made available to these students.
