SUMMER READING
SUPT. ANNOUNCES AUGUST’S BOOKS OF THE MONTH

July 24, 2003

Miami-Dade's Superintendent of Schools Merrett R. Stierheim announced August's Books of the Month today, in conjunction with the school district's successful JUST READ campaign to encourage reading.

"Our August selections are quality reading materials that young readers and their families can read together during the summer," said Stierheim. "Be on the lookout for new reading selections to be announced for the new school year to keep student reading momentum going."

Recommended by the district's reading teachers and media specialists, these selections are to hone reading skills at various grade levels. August's selections are as follows:

THEME: TRAVELERS' TALES

Kindergarten - Grade 2

Traveling to Tondo: A Tale of the Nkundo of Zaire Retold by Verna Aardema

Grade 3 - Grade 5

Chanticleer and the Fox, adapted from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales by Barbara Cooney

Middle School

Shipwrecked: The True Adventures of a Japanese Boy by Rhoda Blumberg

Senior High/Adult

A Step from Heaven by An Na

Multilingual Selection

Me llamo María Isabel by Alma Flor Ada (MIDDLE SCHOOL)

The Books of the Month and JUST READ are part of the School Board's Comprehensive Reading Plan implemented in 1998 to ensure all students read at grade level by grade 3. Improved student test scores in reading comprehension prompted the Board to expand the plan in 2001 for another three years and to enhance it with an ambitious reading intervention program to some middle schools and high schools.

August's Books of the Month, as well as reading tips for students and parents, can be accessed online at the district's reading website:
