NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHERS HONORED

February 13, 2003

The Miami-Dade County School Board honored 182 new National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) yesterday. The teachers have received the highest honor their profession has to offer and serve as role models and spokespersons in the effort to build and strengthen the teaching profession.

As part of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification process, teachers are expected to complete a portfolio of 120-200 hours of videotaped classroom instruction as well as intensive, reflective and analytical writing activities. They also undergo a rigorous written assessment, structured as six 30-minute essay responses on effective teaching practices and content knowledge.

Board certified teachers earn a $7,500 stipend from the school district, a salary bonus from the state, and a mentoring bonus to mentor other teachers who are not board certified, including new teachers and teachers pursuing the certification.

The new teachers bring the total number of NBCTs in the school district to 435, representing two percent of the district's teachers. A list of the new NBCTs will be available in the Citizen Information Center in the School Board Administration Building.
