M-DCPS' COMER SCHOOL STUDENTS TO VISIT YALE, JULY 8-11

June 20, 2003

Some 10-15 Miami-Dade elementary school students from the district's Comer schools will attend the sixth annual Comer Kids' Leadership Academy at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., on July 8-11.

The Academy will provide opportunities for the students, ages 8-13, to participate in a holistic development by exposing them to a variety of developmental experiences that prepares them for life in mainstream society.

In addition to Miami, students will be chosen from four other cities: New Haven; Chicago; Orange, NJ; and Asheville, N.C.

There are presently 17 schools in Miami-Dade County implementing the Comer School Development Model. Named for Dr. James Comer of Yale University, the program involves the whole school community in its decisions. It is intended to restructure the milieu of the school by intensive staff training and helping staff to change the way they relate to students and each other.
