SCHOOL CHOICE INFORMATION, RECRUITMENT EVENTS SET FOR DEC. 6 & DEC. 13

November 25, 2003

Students and their families will have an opportunity to explore Miami-Dade County Public Schools' (M-DCPS) school choice offerings at two information and recruitment events.

For education options in north county areas, families may attend the event at Miami Northwestern Senior High School, 1100 N.W. 71 St., on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 10:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Northwest Miami-Dade residents will have an opportunity to learn more about School Choice Zone #1 debuting in their neighborhood next fall. There are nine schools to choose from in this choice zone. All offer different programs that allow families to choose the school that best fits the educational needs of their children.

South county residents may attend an event at the Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition's Arnold Hall, 10901 Coral Way (SW 24 St.), on Saturday, Dec. 13 from 10:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. This event is held in conjunction with the school district's larger Career and Magnet EXPO which will include representation of north county school choice options as well as career and adult education alternatives. Admission to both events is free.

These school choice information and recruitment events are coordinated by M-DCPS Division of School Choice and Parental Options, which enrolls more than 45,000 students in innovative educational programs. School choice gives parents and students an active role in choosing learning opportunities that foster diversity, academic excellence and school-to-career pathways. Public school choice includes magnet programs, charter schools, controlled school choice zones and schools at the workplace.

The deadline for submitting magnet program applications for the 2004-2005 school year is January 31, 2004, except for the New World School of the Arts. Its application deadline is January 15, 2004.
