FCAT COMMUNITY MEETING SET FOR FEB. 21
NEW GRADUATION, GRADE PROMOTION INFORMATION
February 18, 2003
New state laws that require third-grade students to pass the
Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) before moving
on to the fourth grade and that require all high school
students to pass the FCAT to get a high school diploma will
be discussed at a Feb. 21 community meeting for parents.
Set to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Miami Edison
Middle School, 6101 N.W. 2 Ave., the meeting will feature
Schools Superintendent Merrett R. Stierheim, State Sen.
Frederica S. Wilson, Commissioner of Education Jim Horne,
personnel from the Florida Department of Education, a panel
discussion on FCAT requirements and a question and answer
period. NBC 6 Education Reporter Ed O'Dell will serve as
master of ceremonies.
Panel members will include Associate Superintendent Mercedes
Toural, Region Superintendent Willa Young and Dr. Shirley
Johnson from the United Teachers of Dade.
"Parents should attend this important meeting. They need to
know the new state laws about moving from one grade to the
next and graduation &endash; both are now contingent on
passing the FCAT," Stierheim said.
All students in grades 3-10 will take the FCAT during
February and March.
