STATE WORKSHOP SCHEDULED FOR PARENTS OF THIRD-GRADERS RETAINED FOR FAILING FCAT

June 12, 2003

Parents of public school third-graders who failed the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test can learn how to help their children at a workshop from 6:30&endash;9 p.m. Tuesday, June 17th, at West Miami Middle School, 7525 S.W. 24 St.

Reservation forms in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole are being distributed through elementary schools. The forms ask parents to indicate whether they require transportation to the event, care for children aged 4-12, or a translator.

Following registration from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. a light supper hosted by Humana will be offered at the school. Humana also is providing student reading materials to be given to parents.

Florida Commissioner of Education Jim Horne is expected to attend the workshop, which is one of six around the state sponsored by the Florida Department of Education.

The workshop will

  • teach parents how to help their children improve their reading skills through activities over the summer,

  • show them where to find resources for long-term improved literacy, and

  • guide them in helping their children cope in a positive way with being retained in the third grade.
