
M-DCPS' EDUCATOR NAMED PRESIDENT OF SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION
OF COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS

Dr. George M. Koonce, Jr., Associate Superintendent for
School Operations for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, was
recently elected president of the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools (SACS) at its annual meeting in San
Antonio.
A native of Donalsonville, Georgia, Koonce has both a
bachelor's and master's in French studies, and a master's in
educational administration. He earned his doctorate in
education from the University of Miami.
Throughout his professional career, Koonce has continued a
working relationship with different universities. He served
as consultant for the Florida School Desegregation Center at
the University of Miami and Nova Southeastern
University.
Throughout his 35-year career with Miami-Dade County Public
Schools, Koonce served as principal, director, executive
director, district director and region superintendent. He is
currently the associate superintendent for school
operations.
SACS, a regional accrediting body in the South, evaluates
more than 13,000 public and private educational institutions
from early childhood centers through the university level.
Headquartered in Decatur, Georgia, SACS works with schools
and colleges in 11 southern states, from Virginia to Texas,
as well as in Latin America and around the world.
