MIAMI BEACH ADULT CENTER RECEIVES FUNDING FROM GOVERNOR'S PROGRAM

September 12, 2003

Through a new partnership between Just Read, Florida!, the Governor's Family Literacy Initiative, and the Volunteer Florida Foundation, Miami Beach Adult and Community Education Center was recently selected to receive funding in the amount of $37,500 to provide an educational support system for families.

The program will target adult and family literacy, school continuity, and support the use of computer and Internet online classes and other educational support services at Miami Beach Adult and Community, Treasure Island Elementary, Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor Elementary schools and the Miami Beach Police Athletic League.

Family literacy encompasses unique educational approaches, including Parents and Child Together (PACT) Time, a regularly scheduled session for parents and children to play and learn together through interactive literacy activities.

The Governor's Family Literacy Initiative for Florida was launched in 1999 by former First Lady Barbara Bush and Gov. Jeb Bush. Since then, the program has served nearly 7,000 adults and children.
