MIAMI-DADE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS TO MEET WITH COUNTY, MUNICIPAL OFFICIALS
TO PLAN FOR SCHOOL, RESIDENTIAL GROWTH

October 29, 2003

Miami-Dade School Board members will meet with elected county and municipal officials Thursday, Oct. 30, 8 a.m.-noon, to begin a coordinated approach to planning for new schools while planning for new residential developments.

The meeting, at the Miami Art Museum, 101 West Flagler St., is the first joint workshop to take place under an interlocal agreement signed last March by the School Board, the county and 24 Miami-Dade municipalities. The agreement is required under a new growth-management law passed by the Florida Legislature in 2002.

Under Florida Statute 1013.33, every school board must work with its county and municipal governments to coordinate planning for public schools with planning for residential development; this must be done concurrently with planning for other necessary services, such as water/sewer and roads.

The workshop, hosted by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, will feature a facilitated discussion among elected officials to develop a policy direction for implementing the interlocal agreement in participating jurisdictions.
