BRADDOCK HIGH 10TH-GRADER WINS HISPANIC HERITAGE ESSAY CONTEST

October 22, 2003

Stephanie M. Ruiz, a 10th-grader at G. Holmes Braddock Senior High, was awarded a four-year Florida Prepaid Scholarship and a computer for winning in the high school category of Governor Bush's Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Contest held throughout the state. Gov. Bush visited Braddock High to make the presentation.

The essay's topic was "Celebrating the Hispanic Family: How my family has helped me appreciate reading." In her essay, Stephanie credits her parents for instilling in her a love for reading from an early age and how it has helped her achieve academic success.

Some 4,000 students entered the contest. The winners were chosen for their ability to expand on the contest's theme and apply it to their own experiences.
