M-DCPS STUDENTS PLACE IN NATIONAL SCIENCE COMPETITION

Two Miami-Dade County Public Schools students are among seven Florida semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search, America's oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition. The students were selected from 1,581 applicants nationwide.

The students, their schools and the topics of their research are:

  • Bryan A. Lemus, Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School

    A Transgenic Screening Approach to the Development of Arabidopsis Mutants Deficient in the Synthesis of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxylase Kinase

  • Michael Chow, Miami Sunset Senior High School

    Identification of Active Odor Signature Chemicals in Forensic Specimens Using Canis familiaris as Biological Directors

The Intel Science Talent Search has been dubbed the "Junior Nobel Prize." Intel awards a $1,000 scholarship to each semifinalist and $1,000 to his or her school to be used for math and science education. Students were judged on individual research reports, research ability, scientific originality and creative thinking.
