SUPT. ANNOUNCES JUNE’S BOOKS OF THE MONTH

June 2, 2003

Miami-Dade's Superintendent of Schools Merrett R. Stierheim announced June's Books of the Month today, in conjunction with the school district's successful JUST READ campaign to encourage reading.

"Our June selections are quality reading materials that young readers and their families can read together," said Stierheim. "Be on the lookout for new reading selections to be announced throughout the summer to keep student reading momentum going."

Recommended by the district's reading teachers and media specialists, these selections are to hone reading skills at various grade levels. June's selections are:

THEME: POETRY

Kindergarten - Grade 2

Take Me Out of the Bathtub and Other Silly Dilly Songs by Alan Katz

Grade 3 - Grade 5

My America: A Poetry Atlas of the US by Lee Bennett Hopkins

Middle School

Heart to Heart: New Poems Inspired by Twentieth Century Art by Jan Greenberg

Senior High/Adult

Sailing Alone Around the Room: New and Selected Poems by Billy Collins

Multilingual Selection

Oli Ole, Oli Ole Powèm Pou Timoun by Locha Nwèl

The Books of the Month and JUST READ are part of the School Board's Comprehensive Reading Plan implemented in 1998 to ensure all students read at grade level by grade 3. Improved student test scores in reading comprehension prompted the Board to expand the plan in 2001 for another three years and to enhance it with an ambitious reading intervention program to some middle schools and high schools.

June's Books of the Month, as well as reading tips for students and parents, can be accessed online at the district's reading website [
