SUPT. ANNOUNCES MARCH'S BOOKS OF THE MONTH

Miami-Dade's Superintendent of Schools Merrett R. Stierheim announced March's Books of the Month today, in conjunction with the school district's successful JUST READ campaign to encourage reading.

"Our March selections are quality reading materials that young readers and their families can read together," said Stierheim. "Be on the lookout for new reading selections to be announced each month to keep student reading momentum going."

Recommended by the district's reading teachers and media specialists, these selections are to hone reading skills at various grade levels. March's selections are:

THEME: HISTORIC FICTION

Kindergarten - Grade 2	Abe Lincoln and the Muddy Pig by Stephen Krensky
Grade 3 - Grade 5	Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia Maclachlan
Middle School	Mary, Bloody Mary by Carolyn Meyer
Senior High/Adult	Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier
Multilingual Selection	Bonifas ak Malefis by Kiki Wainwright (Haitian-Creole)

The Books of the Month and JUST READ are part of the School Board's Comprehensive Reading Plan implemented in 1998 to ensure all students read at grade level by grade 3. Improved student test scores in reading comprehension prompted the Board to expand the plan in 2001 for another three years and to enhance it with an ambitious reading intervention program to some middle schools and high schools.
