KROP HIGH SCIENCE TEACHER WINS $25,000 MILKEN NATIONAL EDUCATOR AWARD

October 15, 2003

Dr. David Buncher, the science department chair at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School, was awarded a $25,000 Milken National Educator Award in a surprise ceremony held at the school today. Florida Secretary of Education Jim Horne was a special guest at the school, which is located at 1410 County Line Road, Miami.

A 22-year veteran educator of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Buncher teaches Advanced Placement chemistry and honors physics. Additionally, he coached Krop High's robotics team to a state championship this year.

"He's a genuine teacher," said Louise Muscarella, assistant principal for science and math at Krop. "He integrates technology into science, so there are always experiments going on in his classes."

Dubbed the "Oscars of Teaching" by Teacher Magazine, the Milken National Educator Awards were created in 1985 to reward and retain teachers as well as attract the highest caliber professionals to our nation's schools. This year, 100 teachers across America will receive the awards.
