SUPT. ANNOUNCES OCTOBER’S BOOKS OF THE MONTH

HISPANIC HERITAGE

September 30, 2003

Miami-Dade's Superintendent of Schools Merrett R. Stierheim announced October's Books of the Month today, in conjunction with the school district's successful JUST READ campaign to encourage reading.

"Our October selections are quality books that young readers and their families can share," said Stierheim. "Be on the lookout for new reading selections to be announced each month to keep student reading momentum going."

Recommended by the district's reading teachers and media specialists, these selections are to hone reading skills at various grade levels. October's reading theme is HISPANIC HERITAGE, and its selections are:

Theme: HISPANIC HERITAGE

Kindergarten - Grade 2

Carolina's Gift by Katach Diaz

Grade 3 - Grade 5

Nino's Mask by Jeanette Winter

Middle School

17 Park Avenue by Augustin Fernandez Paz

Senior High/Adult

Cuba 15 by Nancy Osa

Multilingual Selection
Grades 3-5 (Spanish)

Las huellas secretas by Julia Álvarez

The Books of the Month and JUST READ are part of the School Board's Comprehensive Reading Plan, implemented in 1998 to ensure all students read at grade level by grade 3. Improved student test scores in reading comprehension prompted the Board to expand the plan in 2001 for another three years and to enhance it with an ambitious reading intervention program at some middle schools and high schools.

October's Books of the Month, as well as reading tips for students and parents, can be found online at the district's reading website
