STUDENT-PRODUCED CIVIL RIGHTS DOCUMENTARY TO PREMIERE AT ORAL HISTORY ARCHIVE DEDICATION

February 13, 2003

A student-produced documentary, "Against the Odds," will premiere at the dedication of the Oral History Archive at William H. Turner Technical Arts Senior High School, 10151 N.W. 19 Ave., Miami, on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 9 a.m.

Miami civil rights veteran, A.D. Moore , is featured in the film. Moore, who will attend the premiere, helped lead the struggle to desegregate department stores and lunch counters. He also was the national treasurer of the Congress of Racial Equality.

The Oral History Archive contains student-produced, videotaped oral histories of Miami's civil rights leaders and will be accessible to community scholars and students studying civil rights. The archive will continue to expand as more students interview community elders about their roles in the civil rights movement.

The archive is a service-learning project of Miami-Dade County Public Schools in partnership with the Historical Museum of Southern Florida and the Institute for Public History at the University of Miami. It is sponsored by a Florida CHESP (Community/Higher Education/School Partnership) grant.

For more information, contact the school's principal, Dr. Ron Hunter at 305-691-8324.
