March 14, 2003

Schools Superintendent Merrett R. Stierheim will receive the National Public Service Award at 11 a.m., on Monday, March 17, at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, 2500 Calvert St. NW, Washington, D.C.

Stierheim was nominated by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Katy Sorenson of District 8. In her nomination, Sorenson cited how Stierheim's 40 years of public service "crossed all segments of our culturally diverse community and state." She also referenced his "strong sense of right and wrong and his well developed moral compass that makes him special and vital to our two million plus residents, including nearly 366,000 public school children."

Stierheim presently serves as Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the nation's fourth largest school district. He has served as Assistant City Manager for Miami; City Manager of Clearwater, FL; Administrator of Pinellas County; Miami-Dade County Manager and CEO of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The National Public Service Awards are presented jointly by The American Society for Public Administration and The National Academy of Public Administration to recognize outstanding practitioners who have spent most of their careers in public service. They have been awarded since 1983 to give greater recognition to and support for individuals who have made a difference in public administration for a sustained period of time.
