WALK-TO-SCHOOL DAY TO PROMOTE SAFETY, FITNESS AMONG MIAMI-DADE STUDENTS, OCT. 8

October 6, 2003

Thousands of students at public schools throughout Miami-Dade will participate in the seventh annual international "Walk Our Children to School Day," Wednesday, Oct. 8.

The event, coordinated in the U.S. by the Partnership for a Walkable America with local support from the Miami-Dade County Safe Kids Coalition and the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, is to promote pedestrian safety and physical fitness among children and to increase drivers' awareness of pedestrians near schools.

The Miami-Dade School Board recently endorsed the event, with special activities at Devon Aire, Morningside, North Twin Lakes, Palm Springs North, Royal Palm and Sylvania Heights elementary schools, to name a few.

On Oct. 8, School Board Member Perla Tabares Hantman will visit Palm Springs North Elementary, 17615 N.W. 82 Ave., Hialeah, at 8 a.m. to join students, parents and staff in related activities. School Board Member Frank J. Cobo will visit Devon Aire Elementary, 10501 S.W. 122 Ave., Miami, at 7:30 a.m.
