MIAMI-DADE PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS SETTLE IN,
BENEFIT FROM BEFORE-, AFTER-SCHOOL CARE PROGRAMS
August 28, 2001
Student membership continued to grow at Miami-Dade County
Public Schools today, with K-12 membership totaling 340,906.
"Historically, the district has seen enrollment grow during
the first week of school and continue to grow after the
Labor Day holiday," said Alberto M. Carvalho, Public
Information Officer.
Many of those students were able to take part in
after-school care, which is offered at 202 public elementary
schools, and before-school care, which is available at 120
elementary schools.
After-school programs, which provide students with a snack,
homework time, games and activities are conducted from
school dismissal time until 6 p.m. and cost $30 per week.
Before-school programs offer supervised, quiet activities
and cost $15 per week.
Programs are offered by one of four providers: the community
schools of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the YMCA, the
YWCA or the Family Christian Association of America
(FCAA).
"These programs have been very successful in providing
students with an extended learning environment in our
district's full-service schools," said Carvalho.
For more information, parents should contact the principal's
office at their child's school or call the school district's
