BLACK ARCHIVES CELEBRATING 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIAMI!' FESTIVAL WITH THREE DAYS OF EVENTS

The public is invited to join "Happy Birthday Miami!," a three-day celebration starting Friday, July 27.

The principal sponsor is The Black Archives, History and Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc. Other organizations sponsoring the observances are the Community Redevelopment Agency, City of Miami, Overtown NET Office, Dade Community Foundation and the Empowerment Zone Overtown Assembly & Trust.

Kicking off the series of events will be Cultural Friday, 7-9 p.m., July 27th in East Little Havana, Southwest 8th Street from 12th to 17th avenues. Cultural Fridays are presented by the Dr. Rafael A. Peñalver Clinic.

Throughout the celebration volunteers from the Black Archives Advocacy and Historic Sites Tour Guide Program will escort students from Douglass, Dunbar, Riverside and Phillis Wheatley elementary schools; José de Diego Middle School; and Booker T. Washington Senior High School, on tours of historic sites. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren and their 10 support groups will pass out toys and school supplies.

On Saturday, July 28, a "Happy Birthday Miami!" Festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the historic Lyric Theater, 819 N.E. 2 Avenue, and at the 9th Street pedestrian mall, two blocks west of Miami Arena. Planned are rides and games for children, cultural performances, symposia, art exhibits, vendors, dancing and music.

On Sunday, July 29, the 16th annual post-centennial tea will be held at 4 p.m. at St. Paul's AME Church, 1866 N.W. 51 Terrace. For more information, or to RSVP for the tea, call The Black Archives at 305-636-2390.
