OCTOBER'S BOOKS OF THE MONTH ANNOUNCED

October 8, 2001

Miami-Dade County Public Schools today announced October's Books of the Month, in conjunction with the school district's successful JUST READ campaign to encourage reading. Recommended by the district's reading specialists, these selections are specific for honing reading skills at various grade levels and ideal for parents and children to read together. October's selections are:

OCTOBER THEME - MULTICULTURAL CINDERELLA STORIES

Kindergarten - Grade 2

The Gift of the Crocodile: A Cinderella Story by Judy Sierra

Grade 3 - Grade 5

Cendrillon: A Caribbean Cinderella Story by Robert D. San Souci

Middle School

Sootface: An Ojibwa Cinderella Story by Robert D. San Souci

Senior High/Adult

Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of an Unwanted Daughter by Adeline Yen Mah

Multilingual Selection

Tomasín y el cerdito by Hilda Perera (Spanish, Grades 3-5)

The Books of the Month and JUST READ are part of the School Board's Comprehensive Reading Plan implemented in 1998 to ensure all students read at grade level by grade 3.

Recent successes, such as the district's 10-point increase in the third-grade reading comprehension median percentile score on the Stanford Achievement Test, prompted the Board to expand the plan for another three years.

October's Books of the Month, as well as reading tips for students and parents, can be seen at the district's reading website at [www.dade.k12.fl.us/inst/lms/index.htm]. Monthly reading selections are available at school libraries.
