SCHOOLS RECEIVE GRANTS FOR 21st CENTURY LEARNING
CENTERS
July 20, 2001
Four grants from the United States Department of Education
will enable 14 Miami-Dade County public schools to implement
21st Century Community Learning Center programs. The grants,
totalling $5,979,270 over a three-year period, will allow
schools to form partnerships with community businesses,
agencies, churches and public and private organizations, and
will provide an integrated array of programs to address the
educational, safety, health and employment needs of their
communities.
Schools benefiting from the grant are: Carol City
Elementary, Comstock Elementary, Hialeah Elementary, Lorah
Park Elementary, South Hialeah Elementary, Allapattah
Middle, Carol City Middle, Hialeah Middle, Lake Stevens
Middle, Miami Springs Middle, North Dade Middle, Miami
Jackson Senior High, and North County Community.
The programs are designed to enable communities to offer
young people safe, enriching, fun and engaging places to
spend the afternoon and evening hours when schools are
closed. After-school programs improve academic achievement,
keep kids safe, help working families and teach children
social skills and conflict resolution. They also lead to
increased school attendance and lower dropout rates.
