February 14, 2001

The School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida today extended Superintendent of Schools Roger C. Cuevas's contract for two additonal years, from July 1, 2002 through June 30, 2004.

The action was proposed by School Board Member Manty Sabatés Morse based on a number of accomplishments achieved under Cuevas's direction during the last four years. These include improvements by students in scores on state and national tests; the decrease of schools graded "F" under the Governor's A+ plan; the enrollment of nearly 27,000 students in 74 magnet school programs; the opening of new schools; the increase in the number of students taking Advanced Placement courses; the Comprehensive Reading Program and the Bridges to Careers math and science initiative; the hiring of more than 5,000 new teachers during the past two years; and the lowering of the tax millage rate through strong fiscal responsibility.

“He is the bridgebuilder in our community...the cheerleader of Miami-Dade County Public Schools,” Morse said of Cuevas. “When there is a problem, he attacks it and takes care of it.”
