DECEMBER'S BOOKS OF THE MONTH ANNOUNCED

December 4, 2001

Miami-Dade County Public Schools today announced December's Books of the Month, in conjunction with the school district's successful JUST READ campaign to encourage reading.

Recommended by the district's reading and media specialists, these selections are to hone reading skills at various grade levels and are ideal for parents and children to read together. November's selections are:

DECEMBER'S THEME - BIOGRAPHIES AND MEMOIRS

Kindergarten - Grade 2

One Man Show by Frank Asch

Grade 3 - Grade 5

Boy by Roald Dahl

Middle School

Senior High/Adult

The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother by James McBride

The Books of the Month and JUST READ are part of the School Board's Comprehensive Reading Plan implemented in 1998 to ensure all students read at grade level by grade 3.

Recent successes, such as the district's 10-point increase in the third-grade reading comprehension median percentile score on the Stanford Achievement Test, prompted the Board to expand the plan another three years.

December's Books of the Month, as well as reading tips for students and parents, can be seen at the district's reading website at [
