EMERSON ELEMENTARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL
TO CELEBRATE 'LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL' DAY, OCT. 11

October 10, 2001

Emerson Elementary Community School, 8001 S.W. 36th St., will celebrate "Lights on Afterschool" day, Thursday, Oct. 11, from 4-5:30 p.m.

The celebration is held in conjunction with the national project " Lights on Afterschool," which is designed to highlight innovative, high quality afterschool programs.   Parents, community and business leaders, elected officials and volunteers are invited to see afterschool programs in action.

This year's event marks the one-month anniversary of the terrorist attacks against our nation.  In observation of this, commemorative activities will highlight the diversity of the participants in afterschool programs.  Additionally, activities will focus on the historical tradition of the American "melting pot" where all races, cultures and beliefs are included and play an important part in strengthening our nation.

"Lights on Afterschool" is a project of the Afterschool Alliance and is sponsored by JC Penney.  For more information, contact Manny Gonzalez at 305-995-1242.
