MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS' ENERGY COSTS AMONG STATE'S LOWEST

September 20, 2001

The Miami-Dade school district's cost of energy per full-time student is among the lowest in Florida, according to a report by the Florida Department of Education.

Superintendent of Schools Roger C. Cuevas said the report "validates the ongoing effectiveness of the district's utilities cost containment program."

According to Wayne V. Pierson, the Florida Department of Education's Deputy Commissioner for Planning, Budgeting and Management, the Miami-Dade school district's cost of electricity for 1999-2000 was $99.68 per full-time equivalent student. Sixty of Florida's 67 school districts had higher comparable costs.

The district's cost of all energy, including natural gas, liquified petroleum gas, heating oil and electricity, was $103.58 per full-time equivalent student, lower than that of 59 of the state's other school districts.

Superintendent Cuevas called the figures particularly impressive considering the district's extensive adult and community education programs and full-service schools, which are not included in the full-time-equivalent formula but require facilities to be operated at night and on weekends.
