STATE SCIENCE ASSOCIATION TO HONOR TWO M-DCPS SCIENCE TEACHERS OCT. 19TH

September 19, 2001

The Florida Association of Science Teachers (FAST) will honor two Miami-Dade County Public Schools teachers, Beth Davis and Dr. Wafa Khalil, at its annual conference Friday, Oct. 19th at the Kennedy Space Center's Apollo/Saturn V facility near Titusville.

Davis, a science teacher at Jack D. Gordon Elementary, runs a laboratory program for the school's 1,300 students. She shares hands-on and minds-on science activities and also organizes the Kids for Kids program in which Jack Gordon students prepare and donate bookbags of school supplies to less fortunate students.

Dr. Khalil, a teacher and science department chair at MAST Academy, has sponsored a "mini conference" on Contemporary Issues in Science for the past three years. Her students speak on several topics and host panel discussions. Currently writing a book on solar energy, Dr. Khalil also hosts Solar Energy Day in which students create and demonstrate projects.

A professional state organization, FAST annually honors teachers and other professionals for their contributions to the sciences.

For further information, contact Dr. Gustavo Loret-de-Mola, district science supervisor, at 305-995-1989.
