Four Miami-Dade County Public Schools students are semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search, America's oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition. The students were selected from 1,592 applicants nationwide.

The students, their schools, and the topics of their research are:

Nihar Ganju, North Miami Senior High School
Vitamin-D Expression in Human Prostate Tumor Cells

Marylynne Kristy Hunt-Dorta, North Miami Senior High School
Affects of Concentrating Minority Students on Minority Student Performance

Uri Laserson, Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School

Can the Volume of North Brazilian Current Rings Be Observed from TOPEX/POSEIDON Altimetry?

Intel awards a $1,000 scholarship to each semifinalist and $1,000 to his or her school to be used for math and science education programs. Sixty-one Miami-Dade County Public Schools students, an increase in participation of 50% over last year, submitted research projects. Students were judged on individual research reports, research ability, scientific originality and creative thinking. The four Miami-Dade County students are among eleven selected as semifinalists in Florida.
