March 20, 2001

Five Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) jazz bands will kick off two of six free concerts March 23-24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Miami's historic Lyric Theater, 819 NW 2nd Ave.

On Friday, March 23, the Hialeah-Miami Lakes Trojan Band, directed by Eloys George, Jr. and the Miami Northwestern Senior High School Jazz Band, led by Christopher Dorsey, will feature swing music and modern arrangements for the big band. On Saturday, March 24, the Miami Senior High Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Lupe Pera, the Miami Beach Senior High Jazz Band, directed by Bringle Cidel, and the Miami Jackson Senior High Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jermaine Fleming, will perform big band arrangements with a Latin beat.

M-DCPS' jazz program has grown in recent years, both in quality and quantity. Local high school jazz bands have appeared at the National Association of Jazz Educators conference in New York City, the Midwest Band Conference in Indianapolis and numerous other prestigious musical gatherings. Additionally, three jazz students from Miami-Dade were chosen as members of the national Grammy jazz ensemble last February.

For additional information, contact James A. Smith, District Supervisor for Music Education, at 305-995-1942.
