PATRIOTIC MUSIC ENCOURAGED, CELEBRATED AT M-DCPS

Following recently issued guidelines, patriotic music
will take center stage in Miami- Dade County's public
schools. Music supervisors will add patriotic music to the
K-12 Competency-Based Curriculum under component V; Personal
and Social Music Development and Life-long Music
Learning.
"It is important for all of our students to be familiar with
our nation's rich repertoire of music and to know the words
to our national anthem and other patriotic songs," said Dr.
Michael M. Krop, School Board Vice Chair.
This year, all new music teachers received a list of
patriotic music at their orientation meeting. Also, all
state-adopted textbooks feature a section on patriotic music
and songs listed in the Competency-Based Curriculum for
elementary grades.
Miami-Dade County public school bands will participate in
local Veteran's Day parades on November 9th and 11th, and
will participate in the Celebration of Great Bands on
November 10th at Traz Powell Stadium on the North Campus of
Miami-Dade Community College, 11380 N.W. 27th Ave.,
Miami.
On November 29th, at 6 p.m., the Division of Life Skills and
Special Projects wilt present a patriotic concert at the
Jackie Gleason Theatre of the Performing Arts, 1700
Washington Ave., Miami Beach. The concert will honor the
victims of the September 11th tragedy.
