PATRIOTIC MUSIC ENCOURAGED, CELEBRATED AT M-DCPS

October 10, 2001

Following recently issued guidelines, patriotic music will take center stage in Miami- Dade County's public schools. Music supervisors will add patriotic music to the K-12 Competency-Based Curriculum under component V; Personal and Social Music Development and Life-long Music Learning.

"It is important for all of our students to be familiar with our nation's rich repertoire of music and to know the words to our national anthem and other patriotic songs," said Dr. Michael M. Krop, School Board Vice Chair.

This year, all new music teachers received a list of patriotic music at their orientation meeting. Also, all state-adopted textbooks feature a section on patriotic music and songs listed in the Competency-Based Curriculum for elementary grades.
Miami-Dade County public school bands will participate in local Veteran's Day parades on November 9th and 11th, and will participate in the Celebration of Great Bands on November 10th at Traz Powell Stadium on the North Campus of Miami-Dade Community College, 11380 N.W. 27th Ave., Miami.

On November 29th, at 6 p.m., the Division of Life Skills and Special Projects wilt present a patriotic concert at the Jackie Gleason Theatre of the Performing Arts, 1700 Washington Ave., Miami Beach. The concert will honor the victims of the September 11th tragedy.
