MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS' PROGRESS CITED IN NATIONAL EDUCATION STUDY

May 22, 2001

Miami-Dade County Public Schools was recognized in a national study released today by the Council of the Great City Schools for making significant progress in math and narrowing the racial achievement gap.

The report, Beating the Odds, is a survey of how major city school systems are performing on state assessments.

M-DCPS was among 23 urban districts posting math score gains that were faster than their states in half or more of the grades tested. The school district was also among four that were particularly noteworthy for having narrowed the racial achievement gaps in all or almost all grades tested by the state.

"We are extremely pleased that the progress made by our schools has been noted at the national level," said Roger C. Cuevas, Superintendent of Schools. "These achievements represent the hard work and dedication of many teachers, students, administrators and parents."
