January 26, 2001

Roger C. Cuevas, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, was selected to participate in a national educational dialogue hosted by the White House this morning.

The dialogue brought together local, state and national education leaders as well as business leaders from Fortune 500 companies to discuss President Bush's education proposals. The plan, titled "No Child Left Behind," includes proposals for improving the academic performance of disadvantaged students, boosting teacher quality, moving limited English proficient students to English fluency, promoting informed parental choice and innovative programs, encouraging safe schools for the 21st century, increasing funding for Impact Aid and encouraging freedom and accountability.

Cuevas has voiced his support for the plan, which stresses greater emphasis in early grade reading programs as well as math and science programs for all students while allowing individual school districts flexibility in the methodology used to achieve that goal.

"Miami-Dade County Public Schools has placed great emphasis on kindergarten and pre-k reading for all students as part of our successful 'Just Read!' initiative," Cuevas said. "We are seeing wonderful results as our young students progress, which evidences our district's effectiveness and accountability."
